"Worrying Less About Teens, Texting, and Social Media" By: Tara Parker-Pope

http://teentextaddict.com/
In the article "Worrying Less About Teens, Texting, and Social Media" by Tara Parker-Pope, address how many parents get stressed over how much time their children are spending on social networks and texting. Parker-Pope believes that parents should worry less and stop feeding into all the recent studies. According to Dr. Michael Rich, a pediatrician and the director of the Center on Media and Child Health at Children’s Hospital Boston, "much social media research has been on what people call the danger paradigm.” In other words, a lot of the research that has been printed, proving that social media and texting are harming our teens, has been found to be just to scare parents and have not been found to useless.

Parker-Pope effectively uses logos and ethos to prove her argument. For instance, she makes reference to Dr. Rich and Dr.Klass, both which are pediatricians. Also Parker-Pope takes what the doctors have said, then forms her own opinion as to regards the topic. Also on the website that the article is found, there is a small insert about the author. The insert adds to her creditability because it states that she takes what different doctors have said to improve your health, then produces her own opinion to benefit the readers best.

As a teen that does use social media daily, I believe that the risk that the doctors have found, are not always to be true. On the other hand, I do believe that too much of anything can be bad for anyone, whether it be food, media, or reading books. Social media is a wonderful advancement in technology and I think when it is used correctly and in moderation, it could benefit teenagers. Many adults look down upon teenagers who use social media daily or all the time. Is social media not used much more than adults? Do not adults loose jobs over their social networking pages? Are they not as much at risk as teenagers?

  1. Is this true? If so imma be real hot! How they gone sit there and try and scare parents. Got my mom thinking I am corrupted because of texting. SMH. I agree with the article texting has nothing to do with anything humm :)

  2. Since when is texting harmful? If that's the case everybody(INCLUDING PARENTS) needs to stop texting. The likelihood (is that a word?) of that happening is slim to none because last time I checked texting isn't harmful...well except for when you're texting and driving but you shouldn't be doing that ANYWAYS!

    1. Yea likelihood is a word lol and texting wasn't the only thing that parents were getting conerned about it was also social media in general. But i agree the only thing parents need to be concerned about is texting and driving.

  3. LOL You're right, how is it that we both ended up with the exact same pair of articles... great minds think a like you know! lol Well it's needless to say any more, I agree with limits, media isn't neccesarily to be considered scarry but then again we can't look past the dangers most mediums can present.

    Peace Out!

  4. I disagree with this and I have an article that I can use to prove it (check my blog for the article). It's not just the child's fault that they are "addicted" to the media and what not. It is also the parents fault because they aren't allowing their children to go outside the house because it's "too dangerous". RIIIIGHT. Pros and Cons people!

  5. I do agree that there is a biased part to this article. I mean, why are they only targeting kids that texting is bad for you. Plently of adults text too, as well as drive, even though that's not related, but still? I don't think texting is as harmful as they are portraying it, its such an easier and faster way to commuicate with one another, and everyone knows that.

  6. Briana-you say that social media can benefit teenagers (and adults). What do you think the benefits are? Just curious.

    1. Well some could include finding a job, finding their true love(this doesn't happen all the time), many celebrities have been discovered through social media. Without social media such as texting many would have died if they couldn't send a quick text saying help me or something to that degree.

  7. If you ask me, i don't think theres any harm behind social media. Even if, if you say use it moderation, exactly what is that? Also, if you think about it, compare the amount teenagers text to the amount of time adults spend on the phone, there isn't much of a difference in my opinion. Without this, our ability to communicate will be much harder than they already are.

    1. I agree my mother is constantly on her cell whether its texting, checking email or facebook, or on a phone call! And then she says that I spend to much time on the computer or texting! by the way today I have only sent 3 messages one to her and the other two to my dad! I know for a fact she has sent at least 30! lol

  8. I'm not sure whether or not texting is harmful but may be the writer is exaggerating a little too much. And if this is the case, then parents should also be limited to texting. The writer does seem to show a bias and all possiblities weren't thought of at the time this article was written.

  9. Texting is harmful? Well, that depends on the person. I don't own a cell phone, so I wouldn't know. But, I can witness to the fact that my mom has her share of time on social networks like Twitter and Facebook, but not a ridiculous amount, and the same goes for me. All those studies and things like that that have parents running rampid is sort of silly. If parents don't want their children growing up corrupted by texting and social media...WELL SPEND SOME TIME WITH YOUR CHILDREN!!! READ THE BIBLE OR SOMETHING! Lawd have mercy!
